Oxidative Phosphorylation Capacity

Meaning

Oxidative Phosphorylation Capacity refers to the maximal rate at which the mitochondrial electron transport chain can generate Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) using oxygen as the final electron acceptor. This capacity represents the ultimate limit of a cell’s ability to produce energy aerobically and is a fundamental determinant of tissue vitality and functional reserve. A diminished capacity is a core feature of mitochondrial dysfunction and is strongly associated with chronic fatigue and metabolic decline.
