Oxidative Eustress

Meaning

Oxidative Eustress refers to a beneficial, low-level, transient increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) that is strategically induced by the body or by controlled external stimuli, serving as a signal to activate adaptive cellular defense mechanisms. Unlike chronic oxidative distress, this mild, short-term oxidative challenge acts as a form of hormesis, upregulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes and DNA repair pathways, ultimately enhancing cellular resilience and longevity. This process is a key mechanism underlying the health benefits of exercise and certain phytochemicals.
