Owl Chronotype

Meaning

The Owl Chronotype, often referred to as the “Evening Type,” describes an individual whose endogenous circadian rhythm is significantly delayed, resulting in a strong, inherent preference for late bedtimes and late wake-up times. These individuals naturally feel most alert and productive in the late afternoon or evening and struggle to fall asleep before midnight or later. This profile reflects a physiological misalignment where the timing of key circadian markers, such as the Dim Light Melatonin Onset (DLMO) and the core body temperature minimum, occurs several hours later than the population average. When forced to adhere to early social schedules, this chronotype often experiences chronic social jetlag and associated metabolic and hormonal disruptions.
