Overtraining Syndrome

Meaning

Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) is a severe, multifaceted neuroendocrine and psychological condition resulting from a chronic, sustained disparity between high-intensity physical training load and insufficient biological recovery, leading to a profound and prolonged decline in athletic performance. This state is clinically distinguishable from transient overreaching by the persistence of severe fatigue, mood disturbance, and systemic physiological dysfunction, often requiring extended periods of cessation from rigorous activity for full recovery.
