Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation

Meaning

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is an advanced fertility preservation technique involving the surgical removal, freezing, and long-term storage of a portion of the ovarian cortical tissue, which harbors the body’s entire reserve of primordial follicles. This procedure is primarily offered to young women and pre-pubertal girls facing gonadotoxic treatments, such as aggressive chemotherapy or radiation, that risk causing premature ovarian insufficiency. The stored tissue can later be thawed and transplanted back, aiming to restore both vital endocrine function and the potential for fertility.
