Ovarian Reserve

Meaning

Ovarian reserve is the clinical term used to quantify the remaining functional capacity of the ovaries, specifically the number and quality of oocytes (eggs) within the primordial follicle pool. It is the primary biological determinant of a woman’s reproductive lifespan and is assessed clinically through hormonal markers, such as Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and by ultrasound measurement of antral follicle count. A diminishing ovarian reserve is a natural physiological marker of reproductive aging.
