Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Meaning

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is an iatrogenic complication of controlled ovarian stimulation, typically involving the administration of exogenous gonadotropins during fertility treatments, characterized by an exaggerated response of the ovaries. This condition leads to ovarian enlargement and the rapid shift of fluid from the vascular space into the abdominal and pleural cavities, causing ascites, hemoconcentration, and potential thromboembolic events. It is a serious, though often preventable, risk of reproductive endocrinology.
