Ovarian Hyperstimulation

Meaning

Ovarian hyperstimulation is a clinical state characterized by an excessive, iatrogenic response of the ovaries to exogenous gonadotropin administration, typically during assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF). This condition results in the development of numerous ovarian follicles, leading to supraphysiological levels of circulating sex steroids, vascular permeability, and fluid shifts, which can manifest as a potentially severe, multi-system syndrome known as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
