Ovarian Hormone Sensitivity

Meaning

Ovarian Hormone Sensitivity describes the degree to which ovarian cells, specifically granulosa and theca cells, respond to stimulation by the pituitary gonadotropins, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This responsiveness is a crucial determinant of ovarian reserve, follicular development, and the resulting production of sex steroids like estrogen and progesterone. Diminished sensitivity, often due to aging or receptor downregulation, necessitates higher gonadotropin levels to achieve the same physiological effect, reflecting a decline in reproductive function. The clinical assessment of this sensitivity is central to fertility evaluation.
