Ovarian Follicular Reserve

Meaning

Ovarian Follicular Reserve is the finite, non-renewable pool of primordial, primary, and secondary follicles residing within the ovaries at any given time, representing the total reproductive potential of a female. This reserve is the biological clock of reproductive longevity, as its size dictates the remaining years of fertility and the timing of menopause. Clinically, the size of this reserve is estimated by measuring specific biomarkers like Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). A decline in the reserve signifies a reduction in both the quantity and often the quality of oocytes, which is a key physiological aspect of reproductive aging.
