Ovarian Epimerase

Meaning

Ovarian epimerase refers to the enzyme activity, specifically the Δ5-Δ4 isomerase function, of 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) within the ovary. This enzyme is crucial for converting Δ5-steroid precursors into Δ4-ketosteroids, a fundamental step in the biosynthesis of progesterone, androgens, and estrogens. Its action facilitates the transformation of less active steroid intermediates into their physiologically potent forms, essential for reproductive endocrine function.
