Ovarian Endometriomas

Meaning

Ovarian endometriomas are specific cysts that form within the ovaries, characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue, which normally lines the uterus. These cysts are a common manifestation of endometriosis, a chronic condition where this tissue grows outside the uterine cavity. Often colloquially referred to as “chocolate cysts” due to the dark, old blood they contain from cyclical bleeding, they represent a localized form of ectopic endometrial growth within the ovarian parenchyma.
