Ovarian Endometriomas

Meaning

Ovarian Endometriomas are pathological cysts that develop within the ovarian tissue, which are specifically characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial-like tissue, often referred to as “chocolate cysts” due to their dark, old blood content. These lesions are a common manifestation of endometriosis, a chronic inflammatory and hormonally responsive gynecological disorder. Ovarian endometriomas can cause significant symptoms, including chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and impaired ovarian function, contributing to subfertility or infertility. Their presence indicates a localized, hormonally-driven inflammatory process.
