Ovarian Dysfunction

Meaning

Ovarian dysfunction describes any pathological condition that impairs the normal physiological function of the ovaries, leading to abnormalities in either hormone production or ovulatory capacity. This clinical term encompasses a spectrum of disorders, including premature ovarian insufficiency, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, all of which disrupt the intricate hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. The consequence is often a derangement in the cyclical production of estrogen and progesterone, manifesting clinically as menstrual irregularities, infertility, and symptoms related to hormonal imbalance. Accurate diagnosis requires detailed endocrine assessment and imaging.
