Ovarian Attrition

Meaning

Ovarian Attrition is the irreversible, continuous, and non-replenishable process of decline in the total number of primordial follicles within the ovaries, which serves as the definitive biological clock for the female reproductive lifespan. This physiological decline commences before birth and accelerates markedly as a woman approaches the late reproductive years and perimenopause. The progressive depletion of this follicular reserve is the direct underlying cause of the cessation of menstrual cycles and the ultimate onset of menopause.
