Ovarian Androgens

Meaning

Ovarian Androgens are steroid hormones, principally androstenedione and testosterone, synthesized and secreted by the theca cells within the ovarian stroma of the female gonad. Although they are structurally androgens, their primary physiological role in the female reproductive system is to serve as the essential precursor molecules for the subsequent synthesis of estrogens by the granulosa cells. Their production is tightly regulated and crucial for normal follicular development.
