Ovarian Androgenesis

Meaning

Ovarian Androgenesis is the physiological process by which the ovaries, primarily through the theca cells, synthesize and secrete androgens, such as testosterone and androstenedione, which are crucial steroid hormone precursors in women. While often associated with male characteristics, these androgens are vital for maintaining female libido, bone density, muscle mass, and overall well-being, serving as the necessary substrates for subsequent estrogen production. Dysregulation of this process, often seen in conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, can lead to clinical manifestations of androgen excess or deficiency.
