Osteoprotegerin

Meaning

Osteoprotegerin, or OPG, is a soluble glycoprotein acting as a decoy receptor for RANK ligand (RANKL). It is a vital regulator in bone remodeling, primarily by inhibiting the differentiation, activation, and survival of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone resorption. This protein is a key component of the complex system maintaining skeletal integrity.
