Osteopenia

Meaning

Osteopenia is a clinical condition characterized by bone mineral density (BMD) that is lower than normal peak density but not yet low enough to be classified as osteoporosis, representing a precursor state of increased skeletal fragility. It is diagnosed using a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan, with a T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 standard deviations below the young adult mean. While less severe than osteoporosis, osteopenia significantly increases the risk of future fractures and serves as a crucial warning sign for implementing preventative strategies. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen decline in post-menopausal women, are major contributors to the development of this condition.
