Osteonecrosis of Jaw

Meaning

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) is a severe and debilitating condition characterized by the progressive destruction and death of bone tissue in the maxilla or mandible, leading to exposed bone that fails to heal for an extended period, typically over eight weeks. Clinically, it is most frequently associated with the use of antiresorptive medications, such as bisphosphonates or denosumab, used to treat osteoporosis or cancer-related bone disease. This condition underscores the critical balance of bone remodeling influenced by systemic therapies and local factors.
