Meaning

The osteocyte is the most abundant cell type within mature bone tissue, residing within small lacunae and forming an intricate, interconnected network throughout the mineralized matrix. Functioning as the principal mechanosensory cell of the skeletal system, the osteocyte detects mechanical strain—such as that induced by exercise—and translates these physical forces into biochemical signals that regulate bone remodeling. These cells are essential for maintaining skeletal integrity, regulating mineral homeostasis, and influencing systemic metabolism through the secretion of endocrine factors like fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and sclerostin. Their health is paramount for long-term bone and hormonal wellness.
