Osteoclastogenesis is the specialized biological process of forming new osteoclasts, which are large, multinucleated cells responsible for bone resorption, the breakdown of bone tissue. This process is essential for maintaining bone homeostasis, as it is coupled with osteoblast activity (bone formation) in the continuous process of bone remodeling. Dysregulation, leading to excessive osteoclastogenesis, is a key pathological feature in conditions like osteoporosis, resulting in a net loss of bone mass and increased fracture risk. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen and parathyroid hormone, are potent regulators of this cellular process.
