Osteoclast

Meaning

An Osteoclast is a large, multinucleated cell of hematopoietic origin, specialized for bone resorption, the process of breaking down bone tissue by secreting acid and proteolytic enzymes. These cells are essential for mobilizing calcium from the bone matrix into the bloodstream and for the maintenance of skeletal architecture during bone remodeling. Their regulated activity is critical for preventing hypercalcemia and maintaining bone health.
