Osteo-Immunology

Meaning

Osteo-Immunology is an interdisciplinary field of study that investigates the intricate and reciprocal interactions between the skeletal system, or osteo, and the immune system. This relationship is profound because bone marrow is the primary site of hematopoiesis, the production of immune cells, and both bone cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) and immune cells share numerous regulatory signaling molecules and hormonal receptors. Understanding this cross-talk is critical for addressing bone health, chronic inflammation, and age-related endocrine decline.
