Osmoregulation

Meaning

The complex homeostatic process by which an organism actively maintains the balance of water and electrolytes, or osmotic pressure, within its body fluids, ensuring the correct concentration gradient for cellular function. This regulation is crucial for preventing cellular damage from swelling or shrinking and is tightly controlled by the hypothalamus, kidneys, and specific hormones, such as Vasopressin (Antidiuretic Hormone). Failure in osmoregulation can lead to significant clinical issues like dehydration, edema, or severe electrolyte imbalances, impacting overall physiological stability.
