Organ-Specific Aging

Meaning

Organ-Specific Aging refers to the phenomenon where different organ systems within the same individual exhibit distinct and varying rates of biological decline, resulting in a heterogeneous aging phenotype. This concept recognizes that a person’s chronological age does not uniformly predict the functional age of their heart, brain, liver, or immune system. Clinically, accelerated aging in a single organ, such as the brain or vasculature, is a significant predictor of future organ-specific disease risk and overall mortality, necessitating targeted, preventative interventions.
