Orexin Receptor Antagonists

Meaning

Orexin receptor antagonists are a class of pharmacological agents designed to selectively block the activity of orexin, also known as hypocretin, neurotransmitters at their specific receptor sites in the brain. These compounds interfere with the wakefulness-promoting effects of the endogenous orexin system, thereby facilitating the initiation and maintenance of sleep by reducing arousal. Their action directly opposes the signaling that keeps the brain in an awake state.
