Oral Hormones

Meaning

Oral Hormones are synthetic or bio-identical hormone preparations designed to be administered by mouth, where they are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. This route of administration is convenient but subjects the hormone to first-pass metabolism in the liver before reaching systemic circulation. The type of hormone, such as oral contraceptives or oral estradiol, and its chemical structure determine the extent of hepatic modification and the resulting metabolic profile. Clinicians must consider this unique pharmacokinetic profile when prescribing oral formulations compared to transdermal or injectable routes.
