Oral Estrogen

Meaning

Oral estrogen refers to estrogenic hormones administered in tablet form, which are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently pass through the liver before entering the systemic circulation. This route of administration is a common therapeutic option for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to alleviate menopausal symptoms, manage hypogonadism, and prevent osteoporosis. The clinical efficacy and systemic effects of oral estrogen differ significantly from transdermal or other non-oral routes due to the unique metabolic processing that occurs upon first pass through the liver. Clinicians must carefully weigh the benefits against the potential risks, particularly regarding thrombotic events.
