Oral Contraceptives

Meaning

Oral contraceptives (OCs), commonly known as birth control pills, are pharmaceutical agents, typically containing synthetic forms of estrogen and progestin, that are taken orally to prevent pregnancy by altering the normal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. Beyond contraception, they are clinically used to manage hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and severe dysmenorrhea by imposing a predictable, exogenous hormonal cycle. These agents significantly impact endogenous hormonal production and metabolism.
