Oral Contraceptive Interaction

Meaning

Oral contraceptive interaction describes the clinical phenomenon where the pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) are significantly altered by the concurrent administration of other medications, supplements, or environmental factors. This interaction can critically reduce the contraceptive efficacy of the OCP, potentially leading to unintended pregnancy, or conversely, may increase the circulating levels of the contraceptive hormones, thereby raising the risk of adverse events. Rigorous clinical evaluation is necessary for safe co-prescribing.
