Oral

Meaning

In the clinical context, “oral” refers to the route of administration of a medication or substance by mouth, involving ingestion into the gastrointestinal tract. This is the most common and convenient route for many hormonal therapies, including pills, capsules, or liquids. The oral route necessitates that the compound survive the harsh environment of the stomach and small intestine to be absorbed into the systemic circulation. This is contrasted with non-oral delivery methods.
