Opioid-Induced Androgen Deficiency

Meaning

A specific, clinically recognized form of secondary hypogonadism that develops as a direct consequence of chronic exposure to opioid medications, characterized by sub-physiological concentrations of circulating androgens, predominantly testosterone. This endocrine complication arises from the central suppression of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis and is often associated with symptoms such as diminished libido, chronic fatigue, and decreased bone mineral density. Clinical protocols mandate screening for this deficiency in patients receiving long-term opioid pain management.
