OPG/RANKL Ratio

Meaning

The OPG/RANKL ratio represents the relative balance between Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor Kappa-B Ligand (RANKL), two key proteins that regulate bone remodeling. OPG acts as a decoy receptor for RANKL, preventing RANKL from binding to its receptor, RANK, on osteoclast precursors. This ratio, therefore, reflects the delicate interplay that determines the activity and formation of bone-resorbing osteoclasts versus bone-forming osteoblasts, directly influencing skeletal integrity.
