OPG/RANKL/RANK System

Meaning

The OPG/RANKL/RANK system represents a crucial molecular signaling pathway that precisely controls bone remodeling, a continuous process involving the resorption of old bone by osteoclasts and the formation of new bone by osteoblasts. This system comprises three primary proteins: Osteoprotegerin (OPG), Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor Kappa-B Ligand (RANKL), and Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor Kappa-B (RANK). OPG functions as a soluble decoy receptor, competing with RANK for binding to RANKL, thereby inhibiting osteoclast activity and promoting bone preservation.
