Open-Label Extension

Meaning

An Open-Label Extension (OLE) is a structured phase of a clinical trial that immediately follows the completion of the initial, often blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT). In this extension, all participants, including those originally assigned to the placebo group, are offered the opportunity to receive the active study treatment. This phase is specifically designed to gather essential long-term safety and efficacy data, which is particularly relevant for chronic conditions requiring prolonged therapeutic intervention. The OLE ensures continued access to a potentially beneficial therapy for participants.
