Oophorectomy

Meaning

Oophorectomy is the surgical procedure involving the complete removal of one or both ovaries, which are the primary female reproductive glands. When both ovaries are removed, a bilateral oophorectomy, it results in immediate surgical menopause due to the abrupt cessation of endogenous estrogen and progesterone production. This procedure is a major intervention in gynecological surgery with significant, immediate, and long-term implications for a woman’s hormonal health, bone density, and cardiovascular risk.
