Oogenesis

Meaning

Oogenesis refers to the complex biological process by which female gametes, known as ova or egg cells, are produced within the ovaries. This specialized form of cell division involves meiosis, ensuring that the mature egg contains a haploid set of chromosomes, ready for potential fertilization. Unlike spermatogenesis, oogenesis results in a single large, functional ovum and smaller polar bodies, which typically degenerate.
