Oogenesis

Meaning

Oogenesis is the complex, tightly regulated biological process of female gamete formation, culminating in the production of a mature ovum, or egg cell, capable of fertilization. This fundamental reproductive process involves a series of cell divisions, including meiosis, and extensive cytoplasmic and nuclear maturation within the ovarian follicles. The success of oogenesis is intrinsically linked to the delicate interplay of pituitary gonadotropins, such as FSH and LH, and ovarian sex hormones, which dictate the follicular environment and developmental timing.
