Oleoma

Meaning

An oleoma is a localized, non-neoplastic tissue reaction or granuloma that develops in response to the injection of exogenous oily substances into the subcutaneous tissue or dermis. This inflammatory mass is a manifestation of the foreign body reaction, specifically triggered by lipids that the body cannot metabolize or fully eliminate. Clinically, oleomas present as firm, sometimes painful, indurated nodules that can cause disfigurement and require surgical intervention. They are a severe risk associated with the use of non-medical-grade injectables.
