Oil Depot

Meaning

In the context of pharmaceutical delivery, an oil depot refers to a specialized formulation, typically an oil-based solution of a highly lipophilic drug, such as a steroid hormone ester, designed for deep intramuscular or subcutaneous injection to achieve a sustained-release pharmacokinetic profile. The oily vehicle acts as a localized, non-aqueous reservoir from which the active compound slowly partitions and diffuses into the surrounding tissue and subsequently into the systemic circulation over an extended period. This clinical strategy is purposefully employed to minimize the frequency of injections, maintain stable therapeutic drug concentrations, and significantly improve patient adherence to long-term hormonal replacement therapy protocols. The physical properties of the oil and the hormone ester dictate the precise release kinetics.
