Off-Target Toxicity

Meaning

An undesirable adverse effect or toxic reaction caused by a therapeutic agent binding to a biological target, such as a receptor or enzyme, other than its intended primary target. In the hormonal health and drug development space, this is a significant clinical concern where a synthetic hormone or receptor modulator, designed for one endocrine receptor, inadvertently activates or inhibits a different, unrelated receptor, leading to unintended systemic side effects. This lack of selectivity compromises the safety profile of the medication.
