Off-Label Use

Meaning

Off-Label Use refers to the clinical practice of prescribing an FDA-approved medication for a condition, a specific dosage, or a route of administration that has not been specifically approved by the agency and is therefore not officially listed on the drug’s label. This clinical decision is made at the professional discretion of a licensed healthcare provider when they determine that the drug is medically appropriate and likely to be beneficial for the patient’s specific, unapproved need. The practice is legal and common in medicine, yet it places the full responsibility for the decision entirely on the prescribing clinician.
