Ocular Toxicity

Meaning

Ocular toxicity is the clinical term for any adverse effect or damage to the structures of the eye, including the cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, or surrounding tissues, caused by exposure to a chemical substance, medication, or environmental toxin. This toxicity can manifest across a spectrum of clinical signs, ranging from transient visual disturbances, dry eyes, and inflammation to severe, irreversible conditions such as cataracts, retinal damage, or optic neuropathy, potentially leading to permanent vision loss. Comprehensive ophthalmological monitoring is a necessary component of the clinical protocol for many systemic therapies with known or suspected ocular side effects.
