Obesogenic Chemicals

Meaning

Obesogenic chemicals are exogenous compounds, also known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), that interfere with the body’s hormonal and metabolic processes in a manner that promotes adipogenesis, or the development of fat cells, and leads to weight gain. These substances, often found in plastics, pesticides, and consumer products, disrupt the intricate signaling pathways that regulate appetite, satiety, energy expenditure, and fat storage. Exposure to obesogens represents a significant environmental factor contributing to the global prevalence of metabolic dysfunction and obesity. Clinical assessment often involves identifying and mitigating exposure sources.
