OATP

Meaning

OATP stands for Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide, a family of transmembrane carrier proteins primarily responsible for the uptake of a wide range of endogenous and exogenous compounds into various cells, particularly in the liver, kidney, and intestine. These transporters are crucial determinants of the systemic concentration and tissue distribution of many pharmaceuticals, hormones, and their metabolites. Clinically, OATP function dictates the bioavailability of orally administered drugs and the efficiency of hormone clearance from the circulation. Genetic polymorphisms in OATP genes can lead to significant inter-individual variability in drug response and hormonal status.
