Nutrient Partitioning

Meaning

Nutrient Partitioning is the physiological process that dictates how ingested energy substrates, including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, are differentially directed toward various metabolic fates within the body. This critical process determines whether calories are preferentially stored as adipose tissue (fat), utilized for immediate energy (oxidation), or incorporated into lean body mass, such as muscle protein. An optimal partitioning profile favors the storage of energy in muscle and glycogen while promoting the utilization of fat stores. Hormones like insulin and growth hormone are primary regulators of this fundamental metabolic process.
