Nuclear Cofactors

Meaning

Nuclear Cofactors are a diverse group of non-DNA-binding proteins that physically associate with nuclear receptors, such as the androgen receptor or estrogen receptor, to either dramatically enhance (coactivators) or repress (corepressors) the transcriptional activity of these hormone-bound receptors. They are essential intermediaries that bridge the activated hormone-receptor complex to the complex cellular gene-transcription machinery. Their dynamic recruitment and release is a key regulatory step in determining the final tissue-specific biological response to any hormonal signal.
