NT-proBNP

Meaning

NT-proBNP, or N-terminal pro-B-type Natriuretic Peptide, is an inactive N-terminal fragment that is stoichiometrically co-released with the active hormone B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) from ventricular cardiomyocytes. This peptide fragment is a clinically indispensable biomarker utilized primarily for the diagnosis, prognosis, and severity assessment of congestive heart failure. Its circulating concentration is directly proportional to the degree of myocardial volume expansion and wall stress.
