NRF1

Meaning

NRF1, or Nuclear Respiratory Factor 1, is a pivotal transcription factor protein that operates within the nucleus of the cell, serving as a master regulator for the expression of a vast array of nuclear genes essential for the structure, replication, and functional integrity of mitochondria. It is a key molecular component in the process of mitochondrial biogenesis, the creation of new mitochondria. Robust NRF1 activity is directly correlated with cellular energy capacity and is critical for the high metabolic demands of endocrine tissues and all metabolically active cells.
