NREM Stage 3

Meaning

NREM Stage 3, often referred to as deep sleep or slow-wave sleep (SWS), is the deepest stage of non-rapid eye movement sleep, physiologically characterized by the presence of high-amplitude, low-frequency delta waves on an electroencephalogram (EEG). This stage is crucially important for physical restoration, immune function consolidation, and the pulsatile secretion of key anabolic hormones, notably growth hormone. A sufficient duration of NREM Stage 3 is essential for neurocognitive health and metabolic regulation.
