NREM Cycles

Meaning

NREM Cycles refer to the recurring, distinct phases of Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep, which constitute approximately 75% of a typical night’s sleep architecture. These cycles are comprised of three progressive stages: N1 (light sleep), N2 (deeper sleep), and N3 (Slow-Wave Sleep or deep sleep), which is essential for physical restoration. The cyclical progression through these stages is critical for establishing the necessary hormonal rhythms and facilitating memory consolidation. Disruption of NREM cycles impairs both physical and neurocognitive recovery.
